When someone beside me yawns, I yawn too

It is not always sleepiness. Seeing someone else's action can make you copy it.

A contagious yawn spreading between two people sitting on a bench

Someone yawns and even a person with coffee still in their cup opens their mouth too. It does not necessarily mean they are sleepy. A contagious yawn is the same movement but starts differently from a yawn on your own.

There are two kinds of yawning

Yawning on your own is often described as being closer to an attempt to become alert. The evidence does not fit one simple explanation, though, so it is hard to call it a switch for sleepiness.

Yawning after seeing someone else do it is different. Some people start just from watching a video or reading the word 「yawn.」 If this sentence made your jaw feel ready to open, that is the kind we mean. Another common claim is that contagious yawning means you lack oxygen, but contagious yawns alone do not prove that story. Even when yawns chain through a room, the trigger is often the action you see before the air itself.

It is not an empathy score

Some studies find that yawns spread more easily between close people, so they are often discussed with empathy. But the results are not the same in every experiment. In larger studies, factors like age stood out more, and links to empathy scores looked weak.

You cannot score someone's feelings by how often they copy a yawn. Chimpanzees and dogs have also been observed doing something similar. Covering your mouth is good manners; you do not have to read the yawn itself as 「are you tired?」 Claiming that people who catch yawns easily are kinder goes ahead of what the research supports.

If it happens in a meeting

A yawn spreading during a talk can feel awkward. Still, it is not automatically a signal that you are bored. It is closer to your body briefly copying an action it saw.

In daily life, if you yawn after seeing someone else, you do not have to blame only sleepiness. A sip of water or a change of posture is often enough. Contagious yawning is not an illness spreading, so there is no need to weigh down your mood before you worry about the meeting-room air. You can still be awake even if the person next to you yawns. You also do not have to read a copied yawn as proof that your focus has dropped.

A contagious yawn does not mean you are sleepy. It is closer to your body copying an action it sees someone else make.

Notes and references · Research on contagious yawning. Some studies link it with empathy, but reviews and larger surveys also find the evidence mixed or weak.
