The autumn sky looks especially high and blue
The sky has not risen. Clearer air makes it look farther away.

The sky looks low in summer, but on an autumn morning even the same apartment rooftop can look farther away. The sky has not moved up. As moisture clears, your eyes read the distance as greater.
It is like cleaning your glasses
Migratory high-pressure systems often pass through in autumn. Air sinks from above, so clouds form less easily and the tiny water droplets and dust that blur the view also drop. The space that feels high is space cleared of moisture and dust.
Wipe foggy glasses and a hallway looks longer. It has not stretched; you can simply see it better. A common misunderstanding is that the sky itself has gotten higher, but the height of the atmosphere does not change that way by season. What changed is the air in front of your eyes. Even in the same neighborhood, how far things look differs between humid days and dry ones.
The blue looks deeper
The sky is blue because air molecules scatter short blue light well. Lots of moisture, dust, and pollen make that light look milky, so the sky turns pale or whitish.
When the air is dry and clean, the blue overhead deepens and gives a sense of greater height. Compare a humid summer day with a clear autumn day from the same spot, and days when building outlines look sharper than yesterday often feel like a 「high sky.」 The clearer distant hills look, the deeper the sky tends to feel. A lively blue is closer to a signal that there is little in the air to get in the way.
How to use it outside
If things outside look farther away today, the buildings have not moved backward. The air is dry. If the same rooftop looks farther than yesterday, check humidity and dust before measuring the sky.
The same idea helps with photos. A clear autumn sky keeps a strong blue background, so fall leaves and building outlines look sharper. Saying the air has become transparent, rather than that the sky has risen, also explains why the day feels cool. On a walk, do not only look up—check how sharp distant roof lines are, and you can guess the day's air right away. If the view out the window looks farther on a clear morning, that is what autumn air is doing.

The autumn sky looks high because clear, dry air makes it seem farther away, rather than because the sky has risen.
Notes and references · Migratory high pressure and Rayleigh scattering. Autumn migratory high pressure reduces dust and moisture with sinking air. A blue sky results from air molecules scattering short blue light.
