Reading the articles

GK Library Annex (gklibraryannex.com) offers articles without reader registration. We do not create reader accounts, and you do not need to enter your name, email address, or a password to read.

This policy explains the browser storage, visit counting, and external services used by the annex.

Read marks and browser storage

The IDs of articles you mark as read are stored in this browser's localStorage under gklibraryannex.read.v1. These read marks are not sent to the server; they help you find unread articles. They have no set expiry. You can toggle an article's read mark off, or remove all saved marks by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.

We also keep a page-by-page visit marker in sessionStorage to avoid repeated counting requests within the same tab. These markers last until the tab session ends. Clearing this site's browser data also clears this storage.

Visit counts and cookies

We add visits together to display view counts. Our own visit-count database stores only the date, page path, and aggregated number of visits. Those aggregate records do not store visitor names, email addresses, raw IP addresses, or raw User-Agent values. We inspect the browser request's User-Agent to exclude recognized bots and crawlers from the count.

We use a first-party cookie called annex_seen to reduce repeat counting from the same browser. It holds up to 12 recently counted page paths. The server reads this cookie with a request to check whether the page has already been counted. The cookie expires 30 minutes after it is set. When a new visit qualifies for counting, the path list and the 30-minute expiry are renewed.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking cookies or browser storage may change repeat-visit counting and read-mark behavior.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand and improve site usage. Google processes information such as page views, site activity, browser and device details, and approximate location. It may use first-party cookies such as _ga to distinguish visitors and sessions. This processing is separate from the annex's own visit counts described above.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. In supported browsers, Google's opt-out add-on can disable Google Analytics measurement. The links below explain Google's data practices and available choices.

Hosting and external fonts

When delivering pages and handling service or security issues, our hosting and request-forwarding services, ChatGPT Sites (OpenAI) and Vercel, may process request information such as IP addresses and User-Agent values or record it in operational logs. This is separate from our own aggregate visit records. The description of visit counting above does not mean that all hosting logs use the same fields or retention periods.

We request fonts from Google Fonts to display the site's typeface. This may send your IP address and browser request information to Google. You can read Google's privacy information below. Google Privacy Policy

Google advertising

The annex's ad units are currently inactive, and we do not load the AdSense advertising script. The following disclosures apply when Google AdSense advertising is enabled on the annex. We will also update this policy to reflect actual use when advertising is enabled.

Third-party advertising vendors, including Google, may use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this site or other websites. Google's advertising cookies allow Google and its partners to serve ads based on visits to this site and other sites on the internet.

As part of ad serving, third parties may place or read cookies in your browser and use web beacons, IP addresses, and other identifiers to collect and use information for ad delivery, measurement, and personalization. The links below explain Google's and advertising partners' data practices.

You can turn off personalized advertising through Google's My Ad Center. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized ads through the AboutAds choices page. These choices concern personalized advertising; they do not remove all advertising.

When enabling advertising, we will provide the consent flow required for the user's region. Serving personalized ads to users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK, or Switzerland requires a Google-certified consent management platform (CMP) that integrates with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF). This page does not itself collect advertising consent or indicate that CMP setup has been completed. If we use additional advertising vendors, we will add their names and privacy information to this policy.

External sites and contact

If you open an external link, including the main library, references, or social media, that site's privacy policy applies. Sending an inquiry email shares your email address and message with the operator for handling and answering your inquiry. Use the details on our Contact page to request deletion of an inquiry, ask about clearing browser storage, or ask about this policy.
