Why does my alarm beat silent?

Silent mode and morning alarms do not share one switch.

Even on silent, the morning alarm usually still rings. That is not a bug. Phones keep call and notification sounds on a different path from alarms, so you can mute nearby chatter and still wake on time.

Not one shared volume

Ringer, message alerts, video playback, and alarms do not rise and fall together. A smartphone remembers a separate level for each kind of sound. What the side buttons change also depends on what is playing: media while music plays, and often ringer or alerts when nothing is playing. The silent switch or Do Not Disturb mainly quiets the ringer and alerts. Clock-app alarms are often left outside that filter, because the sound that must wake you is treated as more important than a short stretch of quiet.

Built-in alarms exempt

On iPhone, the built-in Clock alarm is said to ring even when the silent switch is down and even when Do Not Disturb or Focus is on. Focus mostly filters app notifications and keeps a separate path for Clock alarms. Android is similar: Do Not Disturb usually has an allow-alarms option, and modes like Alarms only keep the alarm while muting the rest. A Total silence style mode can mute alarms too. Names differ by device, so checking that alarms are allowed in the exceptions list is the safer habit.

What to check instead

A common mix-up is thinking silent means every sound is off. What usually turns off is the ringer and alerts; alarms, timers, and some reminders can still get through. If an alarm sounds too soft, the cause is often a near-zero ringer or alerts slider, not silent mode itself—and the side buttons may be raising only media volume. Third-party alarm apps can also be blocked by Do Not Disturb or Focus unlike the built-in Clock. And if the phone is powered off or fully drained, no alarm will sound.

Silent mode mostly mutes ringer and alerts; the built-in clock alarm often keeps its own path.
