Is something wrong when battery charging slows past 80%?
What happens inside your phone when the last few percent take so long
Once charging passes about 80%, the percentage climbs noticeably slower. Neither the charger nor the battery is broken. The phone deliberately slows down near full to put less wear on its lithium-ion battery. If you watch the screen, it can sit at 99% for quite a while.
Strong at first, gentle at the end
Phone batteries usually charge in two stages. When the battery is low, a steady current goes in to fill it quickly. When the voltage reaches a set limit, the charger holds that voltage and gradually lowers the current.
The second stage usually starts somewhere around 70 to 80%, so that is when the number slows down. That is why going from 80 to 100 can feel longer than going from 0 to 50. It is also why fast-charging ads highlight only the early part, like 50% in 30 minutes. The very last percent often takes the longest.
More sensitive when nearly full
Batteries dislike being completely full and being hot. Pushing power in as hard as at the start when the battery is nearly full creates heat and wears the materials inside faster, so capacity shrinks over time.
So the charging circuit slows down on its own. Many phones now learn your daily routine, pause at 80%, and finish charging around when you wake up, or offer a protection setting that stops at 80 to 85%. Gaming or keeping the screen on while charging adds heat and can make the final stretch even slower.
Is it fine to charge overnight?
Contrary to a common worry, the phone does not keep pushing power in after it reaches 100. The circuit stops charging and tops up only as much as the battery drops. So leaving it plugged in overnight does not by itself break it.
Heat is what to watch out for. Charging under a pillow or blanket, or in a hot car, ages the battery faster. If you are in a hurry, it is fine to unplug at around 80% and go.
If the final stretch is just as slow with a different charger, that is normal. But if charging is unusually slow from the start or the phone gets hot, check the cable and charger. The time you spend waiting for the last percent is not a fault; it is time spent helping the battery last longer.
