Why Does Your Birthday Shift a Weekday Each Year?

A 365-day year is 52 weeks plus exactly one day. That extra day pushes the same date one weekday later every year.

The same date moves one weekday later each year because a year does not divide evenly into 7-day weeks. 365 days make 52 weeks with one day left over. So if October 22 is a Thursday this year, October 22 next year will be a Friday.

52 weeks and one extra day

Group days into sevens and 52 weeks come to 364 days. Take 364 from a 365-day year and one day is left. The date moves forward a full year, but the weekday has to go around 52 times and then take one more step. That is why dates fixed on the calendar, like birthdays, anniversaries, and public holidays, slide one weekday later every year. It happens because the 7-day week and the 365-day year are lengths that were set independently of each other.

October 22, 2026 is a Thursday, and the same day in 2027 is a Friday. The date stays put while the weekday moves one step. Seollal and Chuseok follow the lunar calendar, so their solar dates themselves change, and they do not move by this rule.

Leap years skip two steps

Many people think the weekday always moves just one step, but when February 29 falls in between, the year has 366 days and the weekday moves two steps. 2028 is a leap year, so October 22 skips Saturday and lands on Sunday.

When the two-step jump happens depends on your birthday month. If your birthday is in March or later, it jumps two steps in the leap year itself. If it is in January or February, your birthday in the leap year still comes before February 29, so it moves only one step, and the two-step jump comes the following year. Check which side your birthday is on and you will see it right away.

Calendars eventually match again

Knowing this rule, you can easily guess the weekday a few years ahead. Count one step per year, and one more each time you pass February 29. Between 1901 and 2099, the weekday of any given date repeats exactly every 28 years. In other words, your 28th birthday falls on the same weekday as the day you were born.

Some years even reuse a whole calendar. The next year that matches 2026 in both the weekday of January 1 and leap-year status is 2037, so if you keep this year's calendar, you can use it as is 11 years from now. Holiday markings change from year to year, though, so check just those again.

365 days are 52 weeks plus one day, so a date's weekday moves one step a year, and two steps when February 29 falls in between.

Notes and references · Gregorian calendar date and weekday calculation. These results come from directly counting 365- and 366-day years. The 28-year cycle holds only for 1901-2099 and can break outside it because of the century leap-year rule.
