Why Does a 128GB Phone Have Less Usable Space?

Two reasons the box capacity differs from your phone's settings, and what to check when choosing a phone

Buy a 128GB phone, open the settings, and a good chunk of space is already taken from day one. It is not a defect or a trick. There are two ways to count capacity, and the basic software that runs the phone claims its space first.

There are two ways to count 1GB

Storage manufacturers count 1GB as exactly one billion bytes. That is why product boxes and specifications carry a note such as "1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual usable capacity is less." Some operating systems, such as Windows, instead count 1GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes, which is 2 multiplied by itself 30 times.

That is why the same 128GB phone shows up as about 119GB when connected to a Windows computer. Divide 128 billion bytes by one billion and you get 128, but divide by 1,073,741,824 and you get 119.2. No space has vanished; the same amount was simply measured with a bigger ruler. Recent iPhones display storage the same billion-byte way as the box.

The operating system moves in first

A phone's storage is not empty on the day you buy it. The operating system that starts and runs the phone and basic apps such as phone, messages and camera are already installed, and formatting, which prepares the storage for use, also takes a little space. In the storage screen in settings, this is the part grouped as "System" or "System Data."

Its size varies by model and operating system version, so there is no fixed number. It can grow after an update and shrink when temporary files are cleared. That is why two people with the same 128GB phone may see slightly different amounts of free space.

How to look at it when choosing a phone

Many people assume they can use the full capacity printed on the box, but it is safer to choose on the basis that the space available for photos and apps is noticeably smaller. If you take many photos and videos, first check in your current phone's storage screen how much they take up.

When space runs low, clearing apps you have not used in a long time, videos piled up in messaging apps, and photos already backed up elsewhere makes the biggest difference. System Data is not something you pick and delete yourself, so looking through your own files first is quicker than trying to shrink that part.

128GB is counted in billion-byte units, and the operating system and basic apps take space first, so the usable space is smaller.

Notes and references · Apple Support: How storage capacity is measured on Apple devices. Based on its explanation that manufacturers count 1GB as one billion bytes, some operating systems as 1,073,741,824 bytes, and that formatting and the OS use space. The size taken by the system varies by model and version.
